WORKING IN AUSTRALIA

In general terms, only Australian Citizens and Permanent Resident Visa Holders have an automatic right to work unrestricted in Australia. New Zealand Citizens in Australia holding a Subclass 444 Visa also have an unrestricted right to work.

Everyone else requires a visa which provides work rights. Overseas Students and Working Holiday Makers have limited work rights and must ensure they comply with the strict conditions imposed on their visas.

Those without work rights need to apply for the appropriate visa sponsored by a prospective employer able to meet the current legal and policy requirements. Not all employers are willing and/or able to sponsor overseas workers. Please check any advertised position as to whether it is restricted to Australian Citizens or Permanent Resident Visa Holders or to those with work rights on their existing visa.

Information about Visas and Migration to Australia can be obtained from the Department of Immigration and Citizenship website (www.immi.gov.au).
